The Return of the Milkman?

Many of us think of glass bottled milk as an item of the past. However, with the greater awareness of sustainable living, it’s becoming much more common again for milk to be delivered to front doors in reusable and recyclable glass bottles.

The company: ‘Milk&More’, owned by Muller, have begun taking Cornwall by storm. It was reported last year by CornwallLive that the company had recruited “approximately 200 customers in Cornwall in the last month”.

With over 7500 people in the county getting their milk (and many other products) delivered by the firm’s milkmen. It’s becoming increasingly clear that the demand for bottled milk is on the rise, with Milk&More also expanding their selection of bottles to include juice and smoothies.

Not only is this a sustainable living option, it’s also incredibly convenient, with the deliveries arriving generally before 7am on weekdays so it’s there before you set off for work. (And we can say our goodbyes to the 10pm milk dash when we realise there’s only a drop left for the morning!)

Why are glass bottles so much better than plastic?

It’s also worth noting that if a glass bottle is reused multiple times, its carbon footprint goes down dramatically, which is exactly what happens with milk bottles. The number of times an average glass milk bottle is reused is around 15, though it can be as much as 50 times. Overall, this generally makes re-usable milk bottles a much more energy-efficient choice than disposable plastic.

Additionally, it’s known that many milkmen still deliver using battery-powered milk floats, again reducing carbon footprint greatly. Milk&More have taken this on board, stating on their website: “As a delivery service, we are aware that the emission produced by fossil fuel run vehicles are one of the big contributors to the degradation of the planet. Therefore, in our efforts to try to be more environmentally friendly, we have invested in brand new 100% electric milk floats for our ever improving fleet. This will contribute greatly toward reducing our diesel emissions.”

It does seem as though not all our traditions are outdated, as Cornwall’s love for the Milkman is still thriving. Locally sourced, delicious, and environmentally friendly products bring this practise up to date: Making it modern, popular and hopefully soon maybe even an essential.
