5-Step COVID Cleaning for Self-Catering Accommodation

Help reassure your guests before they come to stay with an easy to follow, step-by-step process for making your accommodation COVID-safe. During these unsettling times, let’s create peace of mind and ensure the well-being of ourselves and others is the priority.

The most important stage in reopening your self-catering accommodation is to ensure you have read the latest Government guidelines. Minimising the spread and transmission of coronavirus is a shared responsibility. Keep you or your cleaners safe by leaving enough time between entering the space for cleaning and guests checking out. This reduces exposure to germs and should be factored into your changeover schedule.

  • Buy the supplies you need. We suggest using disinfectants and sanitiser solutions that are Government regulated.
  • Follow cleaning instructions. Always read the label on cleaning products and use them as directed, ensuring you use protective equipment such as gloves or face masks.

  • Ventilate the space. Increase air circulation before you start cleaning.

2. CLEAN

Before you begin sanitising your space, it is important to remove all dust and dirt. This is the first stage in effective cleaning and removing germs. 

  • Remove all rubbish. Start by emptying bins and safely disposing of any rubbish in sealed bags. 
  • Laundry. Minimise shaking bed linen and towels as this could increase the spread of germs. Put your washing on the highest heat setting recommended on the label and only touch fresh bed linen with new gloves. 
  • Washing-up. To ensure the highest hygiene standards, wash all dishes and utensils in hot soapy water or the hottest suitable dishwasher cycle.
  • Clean all soft and hard surfaces. Use soapy water to wipe down hard surfaces, removing dirt, dust and germs. With soft surfaces, machine wash where possible or follow manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning.
  • Dust and vacuum.

     

3. DISINFECT & SANITISE

Be sure to follow safety instructions when using cleaning chemicals to effectively reduce the number of germs and bacteria. Ensure every high-touch area in your space is thoroughly cleaned with an effective solutions, including light switches, door handles and cabinets. 

 

  • Spray disinfectant on hard surfaces. Focus on frequently touched surfaces, including electronics and appliances, being sure to follow manufacturer cleaning instructions.
  • Leave disinfectant to stay wet for required time. To ensure disinfectant solutions can effectively sanitise a surface and kill as many germs as possible, follow product instructions and the wet contact time required.
  • Leave to air dry. The disinfectant product needs to have sufficient wet contact time to be effective and should not be wiped clean, but allowed to air dry.

4. CHECK

To make the process as simple as possible, create a cleaning checklist for each room in your space. Review this for every room and every time you clean for new guests, sharing the cleaning checklists with cleaning professionals as required. 

  • Double-check high-touch surfaces. Make sure you have sanitised all necessary areas effectively in your space.
  • Conduct an audit of your space. Ensure all items are refilled and restock, and anything broken or missing is replaced.

5. RESET

By using a methodical approach to cleaning your space, you can help avoid cross-contamination and have confidence your space is thoroughly cleaned and sanitised for your next guests. 

  • Wash and remove cleaning supplies. Clear your space of disposable items used during cleaning and wash cleaning cloths on the highest possible heat setting. 
  • Sanitise cleaning tools. Be sure to sanitise any cleaning tools that were used, such as your vacuum cleaner. 
  • Remove cleaning gear. Safely dispose of gloves and masks as per usage guidelines. Use a new pair of gloves in each room to prevent cross-contamination of your space. 
  • Wash your hands. Wash your hands thoroughly with warm, soapy water for 30 seconds or use sanitiser with 60%+ alcohol. 
  • Leave out cleaning supplies. By leaving out cleaning supplies this helps empower your guests to stay safe, and clean on their own during their stay. Be sure to have disposable paper towels, gloves and disinfectant wipes at hand.   • Final check. Review each room and ensure it meets the standards for your next guests to feel reassured and safe during their stay.
